8 Rules for Dementia Care

People with dementia can be challenging for caregivers to handle. Quite often, caregivers find themselves struggling to be sensitive to the needs and feelings of their patients.  It may be difficult, especially when a caregiver becomes overwhelmed and overworked, to keep in mind the needs of their patient.  An Alzheimer's patient often feels unsafe and uncertain of what to trust.

The Rules of Handling People with Dementia:

1. Don’t worry them;

2. Don’t hurry them;

3. Don’t hesitate to “Sorry!” them;

4. If they get mad, step back;

5. If they feel sad, step forward;

6. If you frighten them, apologize;

7. Never argue;

8. Never order them about.

When a person feels unsafe, they need to know that their caregiver is trying to understand their feelings and is respectful of them. Try to stay attentive to needs and be careful NOT to focus only on caregiving tasks.
